In a statement, Rolando Ledesma Macasaet, GSIS president and general manager, said that the pension fund is expanding the life insurance coverage of 27,682 employees of the Department of Health (DOH) nationwide.

Macasaet said that GSIS decided to increase the DOH employees’ insurance coverage because they are putting their lives at risk in the fight against COVID-19.According to Macasaet, survivors of DOH frontliners who demised of COVID-19 will receive an additional P500,000 in insurance benefits.

“This is on top of the P1 million benefit to be provided by the government under the Bayanihan to Heal as One Law and the regular life insurance benefit from GSIS,” Macasaet said.

As GSIS members, DOH frontliners’ legal heirs are entitled to an insurance benefit equivalent to 150 percent of their annual salary in case of demise after contracted COVID-19.

For instance, the legal heirs of a government nurse who earns ₱30,000 a month will receive ₱540,000 in regular insurance benefits from GSIS upon her death.

On top of that regular insurance benefits, the GSIS will pay the survivors an additional amount of P₱500,000 for a total of ₱1.04 million.

“This is to show our appreciation for the courage, heroism and selfless dedication of our frontline workers in government. We hope that this will somewhat help assuage the grief felt by the families left behind by these heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” he said.
