DAVAO CITY – The city government here has waived interests, penalties, and surcharges incurred for non-payment of all local taxes, fees, charges, and fines due to the implementation of quarantine measures amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis.
This, after the City Council approved the extension and waiver of tax interests and other charges since the community quarantine (CQ) and enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) were imposed last March to slow down the spread of COVID-19.
These quarantine measures have limited the movement of people that has also led to the closure of some businesses in the city.
The ordinance was proposed by Councilor Danilor Dayanghirang, chairperson of the Committee on Finance, Ways and Means and Appropriation.
The ordinance cited Section 192 of the Local Government Code of 1991, which provides that “Local Government Units may, through ordinances duly approved, grant tax exemptions, incentives or reliefs under such terms and conditions as they may deem necessary.”
In a statement from City Information Office, taxpayers can still pay their taxes after the lifting of CQ or ECQ without worrying about incurring penalties.
It stated the city government assured taxpayers they will be given a fresh period to pay such taxes, fees, charges, and fines without interest, penalties, and surcharges upon lifting of the CQ and ECQ.
