15 more die of COVID-19 in Quezon City, death toll now 75

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Quezon City surged to 75 as 15 new fatalities were recorded by the Quezon City Health Department (QCHD) as of 7 p.m. of April 14.

In the same QCHD report, six new recoveries were reported upping its tally to 70.

Statistics from the Department of Health (DOH) revealed 941 confirmed COVID-19 307 more than the 634 validated cases of the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (QCESU) and the district health offices during the same period.

From the previous 747 confirmed cases with complete addresses in Quezon City the number jumped to 786 for an increase of 39.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the locality which refers to those who are still alive and have not fully recovered rose to 489 up by 17 from the previous 472.

Extreme Enhanced Community Quarantine (EECQ)

Mayor Joy Belmonte explained anew that the city government enforces the EECQ in barangays with two or more confirmed COVID-19 cases and in different streets and/or in congested urban poor areas where fast transmission is most likely.

However, Belmonte stressed this will still be subjected to the daily review depending on the number of cases / recoveries.

She noted the newly reported barangays with two cases have not yet been included in the list as they are still undergoing validation.

As of 7 p.m. of April 14, the Quezon City government has imposed EECQ in the following barangays:

Tandang Sora, Kalusugan, Ramon Magsaysay, Maharlika, Tatalon, Batasan Hills, Pasong Tamo, Central, San Roque, Paligsahan, Bagong Lipunan ng Crame, South Triangle, Culiat, Bahay Toro, E. Rodriguez, San Isidro Labrador, Matandang Balara, Teachers Village West, Manresa, Paltok, Sto. Domingo, Bagong Silangan, Holy Spirit, Payatas, Marilag, Socorro, Kamuning, Pinyahan, San Isidro Galas, Commonwealth and Pansol.

HOPE 1 Facility

As of April 14, HOPE 1, a temporary quarantine facility has reached its full capacity with 34 COVID-19 positive patients and 6 suspected patients.

HOPE 2 Facility

On April 14, HOPE 2 installed an additional 134 beds/rooms in their quarantine
facility in Quezon City University.

As of April 15, 203 rooms/beds are still available in HOPE 2 with those tested in QC’s community-based testing are
brought here for self isolation while waiting for their results.

Kalingang Quezon City Report

As of April 14, more than 14,400 tricycle and taxi drivers were the recipients of the financial assistance from the Kalingang QC program. The city government will provide financial aid to the tricycle and jeepney drivers, market vendors, solo parents
and PWDs whose livelihoods were severely affected by the enhanced community
Quarantine (ECQ).

Quezon City Community Based COVID-19 Testing

A total of 107 tests were conducted on April 15 in QC’s community-based COVID-19 testing, procedures done in the local government hospitals and QCESU.

Belmonte said that 43 were conducted at the Quezon Memorial Circle, 47 in Quezon City General Hospital, six in Novaliches District Hospital and 11 done by the QCESU.

She noted that interested individuals who want to be tested for COVID-19 should go to their barangay health centers where preliminary interviews and evaluation process will be done before being given the schedule in the testing areas.

Quarantine Violators

As of 11:30 a.m. of April 14, the city government reported that 119 individuals were arrested in Barangay Krus na Ligas for violating EECQ and for failure to wear face masks in public places.

AFP support for the Quezon City government

Belmonte has requested the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for manpower augmentation to fully enforce the ECQ. The additional men from the AFP Joint Task Force National Capital Region (JTF-NCR)
shall be under the command of Belmonte. They AFP will beef up the city, barangay and Quezon City Police District personnel in the manning checkpoints, barangays under EECQ and in ensuring that social distancing in public places such as markets are strictly followed.

Guidelines for the Department of Health (DOH) Hospitals and City Government

Belmonte issued the protocols to guide the 14 government run hospitals based in the city for a much better coordination in the handling of deaths related to COVID-19. In the guidelines, Belmonte encouraged the concerned hospitals to follow the 12-hour period for cremation of the cadaver as provided under the DOH Guidelines 2020-0067 in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
