A magnitude 6.2 earthquake jolted Basco, Batanes early Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The quake, which was tectonic in its origin, was traced 16 kilometers (km) northeast of Basco, Batanes and occurred at 12:44 a.m. It had a depth of 174 km.
Intensity IV was felt in Basco and Itbayat, Batanes.
Meanwhile, the following instrumental intensities were also registered in these areas:
Intensity II – Laoag City and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte
Intensity I – Vigan City
Aftershocks are expected from the tremor.
As of posting, there is still no reported damages in the province of Batanes and in other affected areas of Ilocos Norte and in Ilocos Sur as PHIVOLCS stated that they are expecting no damages due to the recorded earthquake. (With a report from Jhon Dave Ablat)
