The attack happened around 9 p.m. last Thursday, said Police Brig. Gen. Albert Ignatius Ferro, regional director of the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO 7).

Ferro said several shots were fired at the patrol base before the NPA rebels retreated.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt from the government side,” said Ferro.

Ferro is calling on the Communist group to reciprocate the government’s decision to stop its military operations due to the current health crisis.

“We remain hopeful that the CPP-NPA-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front) will reciprocate the government’s gesture in the interest of public welfare and peace in Central Visyas while we are experiencing this medical emergency,” said Ferro.

Ferro said it was Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Albert Gamboa who instructed the police force to cease operations against the Communist group so that military and police personnel can be utilized in efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus disease-2019.

“We are reminding our troops to be vigilant against possible hostile attack. They should always be on the defensive,” said Ferro.
