The red heart emoji was ranked by Emojipedia as the most popular emoji among netizens, especially during this year’s celebration of Valentine’s Day.

Ranked next to the red heart emoji, which also known as Love Heart or simply Heart emoji, is the Person Shrugging, Pleading Face, Smiling Face with Hearts, and rounding up the top 5 is Face with Tears of Joy.

In an article for Mashable Southeast Asia, Rachel Kraus wrote that the ranking was based on the results of Emojipedia’s Emojistats.

Emojipedia defines the heart emoji as: “A classic love heart emoji, used for expressions of love. Displayed in various shades of red on most platforms. A similar emoji exists for the heart suit in a deck of playing cards.”

According to the website, the heart emoji was approved as part of Unicode 1.1 in 1993 and was called “Heavy Black Heart”, the particular name was adopted because this emoji pre-dates the color emoji.

The most popular emoji was then added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

So far, with the results of the recent Emojistats, it may take a while before this well-liked emoji is bumped off its current place.
