MARIVELES, Bataan — A first-of-its-kind cement manufacturing facility rises at the Freeport Area of Bataan in Mariveles town with the re-entry into the cement industry of Phinma Corporation through its subsidiary Philcement.

The state-of-the-art facility that boasts of highly automated equipment, touted to be one of the largest in the world with an initial, annual capacity of two million tons of cement, was brought to fore via a partnership of like-minded institutions as Phinma, Vietnam’s Vissai, the local government of Bataan, and Seasia Nectar Port Services, Inc.

The blessing and inauguration of the plant last Jan. 18 also commenced the plant’s operations. Its efficient and wide scale production is expected to supply the infrastructure needs not only in the Philippines but also in the neighboring countries in Asia.

Mr. Eduardo Sahagun, Philcement President and CEO, said that “In PHINMA, cement is what we know best. Looking at the opportunities from the construction business now, we should prepare to expand, not just in the Philippines, but also in the ASEAN Region. Our Mariveles facility makes PHINMA extremely well placed to take advantage of this growing regional opportunity.”

The event was also attended by Bataan Governor Albert S. Garcia, Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan Chairman and Administrator Emmanuel D. Pineda, PHINMA President and CEO Ramon Del Rosario Jr., Seasia Nectar Port Services Inc. Chairman Ramon R. Atayde, as well as representatives of government agencies and members of the business sector.

In his speech, Phinma President and CEO Ramon del Rosario cited their support of the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build program as one of the key factors that singled the company’s decision to go back to the cement business.
He said, “we want to help ensure success for the program by augmenting supply and offering the highest quality so that these critical projects will see many years of service and support for the longer term Philippine Development Plan and the Ambisyon Natin 2040.”

He added, “we are telling the world today that we are back in cement and, like when we first began over 60 years ago with a vision to help build the nation, we are back with that same burning desire to make it our business to help build the nation by playing a significant role in infrastructure development.”
Phinma’s nation building commitment is further enhanced as Philcement embarks on a greener and more sustainable journey with the new facility in Mariveles. Philcement will engage the host communities in Mariiveles to be part of the production process by providing residents with the livelihood opportunity of sewing the bulk bags so these can be re-used in the facility.

For his part, Gov. Garcia expressed gratitude to Philcement for their trust and confidence to the province of Bataan and assured them of their support. He cited the outstanding synergy that is bound to take place between the businesses as soon as the Bataan-Cavite-Manila Bay Link Bridge, the biggest infrastructure project in the country this year.

PHINMA is paying tribute to its roots as it returns to the local cement industry. Founded in 1956 after the acquisition of the Cebu Portland Cement Company plant in Bacnotan, La Union, PHINMA through the years took over the management of cement plants in Bulacan, Rizal, and Davao – expanding its stake in the industry with quality cement under the Union Cement brand. It is through the revival of this Union Cement legacy brand that PHINMA aims to return to its position of prominence, helping provide a much needed stable supply of high quality cement.
