One dead, 600 families homeless in Baseco fire

A total of 600 families were left homeless after a fire broke out at Blk. 15A, Baseco Compound, Port Area Manila late Tuesday evening.

Around 300 houses were engulfed in flames, leaving 600 families homeless with damage to properties estimated at P2 million.

A 42-year-old man was killed while two people sustained minor injuries including a fire volunteer.

Police identified the fatality as Gino Escobedo, jeepney driver, native of Bicol, and resident of the area.

According to a report, the fire started at the second floor of a two-story structure in the area at around 11:15 p.m.

It quickly escalated to fifth alarm after 12 minutes and reached Task Force Bravo at around 12:08 a.m.

Reports said firefighters had difficulty penetrating the narrow streets.

Fire was declared under control around 1:46 a.m. Wednesday and was put out at around 2:48 a.m.

Probers are now conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
