Gov’t troops seize rebel camp in Abra

BANGUED, Abra – Members of the 24th and 69th Infantry Battalions of the Philippine Army discovered an enemy camp after a firefight with 30 fully-armed Communist terrorists Sunday afternoon in Barangay Nagnasan, Pilar, Abra.

Police Major Carol Lacuata, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-Cordillera, said they received reports from Philippine Army based in Abra, that government troopers were able to recover at the rebel camp an M16 upper receiver, 15 pieces empty shells, an M203 empty shell, eight pieces of M16 live ammunition, and a magazine spring.

Reports said, at 1:15 pm of February 2, combined personnel of the two battalions were on patrol in Barangay Ocup, Pilar, Abra, when they were fired upon by five terrorists, triggering a 20-minute firefight.

In the adjacent Barangay Nagcanasan, the government troops were also conducting combat patrol when they engaged 30 fully armed New People’s Army (NPA) warriors at about 2 p.m.

The operating troops discovered the mini-camp during hot pursuit of the fleeing rebels. The operation was still on-going as of press time.
