DOH announces disease’s official name: 2019-nCoV ARD

The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday officially named the disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus “2019 novel coronavirus acute respiratory disease” (nCoV ARD).

Health Undersecretary Rolando Domingo announced the official name of the virus outbreak in a press briefing on Friday.
“Novel Coronavirus Acute Respiratory Disease, this now the official name of the illness. It’s 2019-nCoV ARD,” Domingo said.

DOH confirmed on Thursday the country’s first case of nCoV ARD involving a 38-year-old woman from Wuhan, China.

The department said 31 patients in the country are under observation for the deadly respiratory virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak on Thursday a global emergency as cases spread to at least 18 countries.

The latest Hubei figures take the total death toll for China to 213. China’s National Health Commission is expected to release new national figures later on Friday.
