Newly appointed Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa said Tuesday that it will be difficult to eradicate the illegal drugs problem.
“Sabi nya (President Rodrigo Duterte), hindi naman natin talaga kayang hintuin yan, let’s bring it sa pinakamababang pwede nating gawin. Yung droga naman kasi, we have to admit na hindi naman totally talagang pwede mong matanggal ‘yun,” Gamboa said in an interview with DZMM.
([President Duterte] told me that we cannot totally eradicate the drug problem, so let’s bring it to the lowest level of activity we can. We have to admit we really can’t totally eradicate drugs.)
In a previous interview, Gamboa said that while the campaign against illegal drugs is his top priority, he will also focus on cleansing the PNP of scalawags.
“Kapag hindi maayos yung kapulisan, public trust, kahit internal yung mga gawain operations, medyo may problema rin. Kaya importante talaga yung cleansing [para] more or less maging succesful din tayo sa kampanya sa droga,”
(Internal cleansing is important because issues and problems inside the PNP affect public trust and our campaign against illegal drugs.)
Prior to his appointment on Jan. 17, Gamboa was the PNP’s officer-in-charge for three months after his classmate, former police chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde, went on non-duty leave amid the “ninja cops” issue.
