Sinanduloy and Lumad Basakanon wowed the huge crowd at the Cebu City Sports Center with the former winning the Sinulog-based category and the latter topping the Free Interpretation category.

It was Sinanduloy’s 13th title in the competition, returning with a bang after skipping the competition the past two years.

Lumad Basakanon, on the other hand, bounced back from a sixth place finish last year, winning another crown after also ruling the Sinulog sa Tribu sa Kabataan last January 12.

Sinanduloy and Lumad Basakanon each pocketed P1 million for the feat.

The Tangub City contingent also received another P1 million for winning the street dancing competition. The contingent also got P100,000 for bagging the Best Musicality award.

Lumad Basakanon got an additional P200,000 for winning the Best in Costume and Best in Musicality awards in its category.

A total of 105 contingents took part in this year’s Grand Parade with 13 competing in the Sinulog-based category and 18 in the Free Interpretation category.

There were 43 entries in the float competition, 19 in the “higante” contest and 12 in the puppeteer event.

President Rodrigo Duterte graced the Sinulog Grand Ritual Showdown. The President arrived at CCSC around 6:30 p.m. and delivered a 20-minute speech.

“This is my way of showing my love for the Cebuanos,” said Duterte, who traces his roots to Danao City, northern Cebu.

The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas said at least 2 million people attended this year’s Sinulog.

Aside from reports of pickpocketing, there were no major incidents reported during the Sinulog.

“This is the result of the tight security measures and the cooperation of the public. The public is now security conscious, they avoid bringing valuables items and taking children to the streets,” said PRO 7 director Police Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon.

The jamming of cell phone signals from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. also helped main peace and order during the revelries, said de Leon.

Valeriano said at least 6,000 policemen were deployed to secure this year’s religious and cultural festival in honor of Senyor Sto. Nino.
