3 tectonic quakes jolt Davao del Sur

BUTUAN CITY -- Three mild tectonic earthquakes jolted Davao Del Sur province Thursday morning, Jan. 16, 2020, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Both the regional Office of Civil Defense in Southern Mindanao and disaster risk reduction and management council there reported no damage or injury.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 5:36 a.m. on Thursday (Jan. 16).

The epicenter was plotted 18 kilometers (km) southwest of Sulop town, Davao del Sur province.

The earthquake had a depth of 23 km, it said. The quake registered Intensity 2 in Malungon, Sarangani

Earlier, a 2.1 magnitude tremor was registered at 5:14 a.m. of the same day (Jan. 16), Phivolcs said.

The epicenter was traced 15 km southwest of nearby Kiblawan town, also of that same province, the state agency said.

The tremor had a depth of 30 km, it also said.

At 4:33 a.m. of the same day (Jan. 16), a 2.3 magnitude earthquake was also recorded, the state agency said.

The epicenter was located only 6 km northwest from the city proper of Digos of that same province, Phivolcs said.

The earthquake had a depth of 15 km.

The three tremors were tectonic in origin and no tsunami alert was raised by the state agency.

Meanwhile, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was also recorded at 6:43 a.m. on the same day (Jan. 16) and its epicenter was pinpointed 100 km southeast of Jose Abad Santos town, Davao Occidental province, with a depth of 40, km, Phivolcs also reported in its latest bulletin.

No aftershock or tsunami alert was raised by the state agency while the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council there also reported no damage or injury.
