A ranking official of the Philippine National Police (PNP) has asked the Aviation Security Group (AVSEGRP) to intensify its monitoring and intelligence-gathering for possible smuggling of illegal drugs in and out of the country.
Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the Chief Directorial Staff of the PNP, said the arrest of drug mules and confiscation of illegal drugs in the past are indications that syndicates may still be sneaking illegal drugs into the country.
“They should not be given a single chance to do it, we should not allow our airports to be gateway for shabu, cocaine and other illegal drugs,” said Eleazar.
Eleazar said ensuring that airports are not being used as gateway in the transport of illegal drugs is the PNP-AVSEGROUP’s biggest contribution to the drug war launched by President Duterte.
“I have seen over the years how you did your job well in confiscating illegal drugs and arresting drug smugglers using our airports,” said Eleazar in his speech.
“All it takes, and all you have as proud members of the PNP-Aviation Security Group is the integrity and courage to say to the drug lords: ‘Not in our turf!’,” he added.
Eleazar emphasized anew the role of the AVSEGROUP in the drug war amid reports that the campaign against illegal drugs is a failure.
He said the consistent reduction of crime volume since July 2016 is an indication that the drug war is winning.
