Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año compelled all local government units (LGUs) on Wednesday to provide ample aid to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returning from the Middle East as the specter of war looms over the region.
“I am directing all the LGUs, local chief executives to provide assistance and accommodate our returning OFWs,” Año said.
Recognizing the plight of the OFWs, Año said they need all the assistance they can get from all sectors including from the LGUs since they are displaced. He described their return as being “untimely.”
The DILG chief assured the returning OFWs that they will be assisted by the national government, with President Duterte even willing to give them financial aid.
Tensions intensified in the Middle East after the United States attacked Iran by killing top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani last week.
After Iran fired rockets at Iraq’s Al Asad Air Base where US forces are stationed, the Philippines raised Crisis Alert Level 4 over Iraq where Filipinos are requested to leave and join the ongoing evacuation organized by the government.
