Vice President Leni Robredo will likely be happy if he is unable to complete his term due to sudden death, President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday.

The President made the candid comment after admitting that he sometimes pushes through with provincial trips despite bad weather.

“I’m 74. Most of our Cabinet members are also at my age, ka-batch ko pa, classmate ko pa, kababata ko, ‘Pag natumba ako, tumba lahat ‘yan. Sigurado ‘yan. Hindi lang ako…. Maligaya si Leni (They are my batch mates, classmates. If I fall, they will all fall, that’s for sure. It’s not just me. Leni will be happy),” he said in an interview with reporters at the Palace.

Asked if he skipped recent two public engagements in Davao last week due to health reasons, Duterte quipped: “Masama ang loob ko, ma’am, hindi ang pakiramdam (It’s my feelings that are hurt, I’m not unwell).”

He recalled that his provincial trips don’t push through due to stormy weather but sometimes he forces his aircraft pilot to take off, especially if he wants to go home.

“If the weather will not allow it, which I — it — a low ceiling cloud, paano ko maglipad (How will I fly)? ‘Di diretso ka sa bukid (Then straight into a mountain)…But sometimes I force them to take off especially if I want to go home. And I do not want to rest on any other place. Pinipilit ko sila na (I make them) mag-take off kami even in total darkness,” he added.

Duterte, however, recognized the danger an aircraft faces when it encounters turbulence.

“You know, when you’re inside a cloud, you’d — and there’s turbulence, ‘yung makita mo ‘pag eroplano ‘pag dumadaan ng (when an airplane passes through) clouds gumaganun (like that), ‘pag nasa — if you are in a thick of a cloud, nawala ka (you’re lost), there’s no way that you can go out safely,” he said. “Because inside the clouds, hindi mo alam kung … naka-upside down ka na (you don’t know if you’re upside down).”

Duterte previously said he would rather see the likes of former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the country’s president rather than Robredo becoming his constitutional successor. He claimed that Robredo is incompetent to lead the country.
