As New Year’s Eve approaches, 45,361 remain displaced by ‘Ursula’ in Panay

Iloilo City — The Western Visayas Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) reported Monday morning that 45,361 people in Panay are homeless in the aftermath of typhoon “Ursula” and are still taking shelter in evacuation centers, as their homes in Capiz and Iloilo provinces were badly damaged by the typhoon.

Capiz province has the most number of displaced with 37,767 persons. This is mainly because of flooding in the majority of towns there. On the other hand, Iloilo province had 6,322 displaced people.

Consolidated data shows “Ursula” damaged 111,266 houses in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo provinces, with 77,461 of the homes totally damaged and 35,805 partially damaged.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad went to Capiz province Sunday to inspect the damage while bringing aid from Metro Manila, including 800 emergency shelter kits and 220 repair kits.

Capiz Governor Esteban Evan Contreras said the emergency shelter kits and repair kits are being distributed in priority areas, particularly coastal barangays.

OCD regional director and Western Visayas RDRRMC chairperson Jose Roberto Nuñez reminded storm survivors to coordinate with the help desks in Roxas City and Pontevedra town for their needs. The help desks are staffed by personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Health (DOH), and OCD.
