The Philippine National Police (PNP) is now crafting a policy that would focus on reformation of the policemen who were meted with punishments for wrongdoings.

PNP Officer-In-Charge Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa said that there was a need to come up with preventive and reformative measures for erring policemen in order to ensure that they would not become repeat offenders.

“The reform should not just be punishment. There are a lot of things the PNP should do like how to prevent it and how to get them back after they were punished so that they will function more efficiently and without any violation,” said Gamboa.

More than 3,000 policemen have been dismissed from the service for various offenses that included involvement in illegal drugs since July 2016. Of the figure, more or less 450 of them were dismissed due to drugs involvement.

The PNP leadership has been tough on cops involved in illegal drugs.

Thousands of policemen were also meted with lesser penalties such as demotion and suspension for lesser offenses.

Gamboa said these policemen are already the subject of their reform programs.

Currently, some of the reforms being implemented was the six-month commando training for newly-recruited cops and subjecting erring cops to spiritual and reformation training programs.

Gamboa said the reformation of erring cops will be included in their main thrusts for the PNP in 2020 which is internal cleansing.

“There are a lot of administrative reforms that we are thinking in the PNP so that it would ultimately result to good operational effectiveness and efficiency,” said Gamboa.

Aside from internal cleansing, another focus of the PNP for 2020 will be the campaign against illegal drugs with emphasis on high-value targets.
