Aspiring YouTubers learn the art and tech of vlogging with Smart Play: Vlogger Camp 2019

Aiming to bring inspiration to aspiring vloggers, Smart Communications, Inc. recently hosted its Smart Play: Vlogger Camp where it gathered some of the country’s famous Youtubers who shared tips and advice on how to create compelling content.

Consisting of five different sessions, the Smart Play Vlogger Camp which commenced in August visited universities around the Philippines starting with Ateneo de Davao, followed by Siliman University in Dumaguete, Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Laguna, University of Baguio, and lastly, Mapua University in Manila.

Among the featured local Youtubers include travel vlogger Wil Dasovich, cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfao, fashion vlogger David Guison, food and travel vlogger Erwan Heusaff, and sneaker enthusiast Carlo Ople. Topics for the said camp include how to find the best video equipment, how to create unique content, and how to earn money on YouTube.

The convention started with Dasovich, who focused on the technicalities of vlogging. During his talk, participants learned about the right video equipment for different scenarios, user-friendly software, music and copyright on YouTube, and various transition effects.

For Dasovich, knowing how to edit your own video will allow you to become a more effective content creator.

“Editing is telling your story as a vlogger. There are some comedian YouTubers, people who can just say jokes on their videos, and they’re funny. I can’t be like that. Those are very fortunate, funny, witty people. I have to tell stories and I created jokes in my edit. Hindi ako masyadong nakakatawa in real life sometimes. But in my videos, I’m funny ‘cause I know how to make myself funny through editing,” he addressed.

Meanwhile, blog writer turned video creator Guison highlighted the importance of branding in order to become a successful vlogger. Looking back on his journey, the fashion vlogger noted that beginners must “visualize your path, leverage your interest, optimize your strengths, and gather insights.”

“If you’re focusing on fashion, relate it to your travel vlog. In my two years on YouTube, I’m still in the process of knowing my audience. Gusto ba nila fashion? Gusto ba nila more on challenge? So kung ako sa inyo, kung magi-start kayong mag vlog, post niyo kung saan kayo pinaka-passionate about, then try kayo ng iba’t ibang klaseng content and atake sa videos,” Guision advised the participants.

Smart also advised participants to use their passion in earning money by simply balancing their time.

“My goal is after my session today, you will walk away in this building with dreams in life. That’s what digital would give you, the ability to find that one thing that you’re good at, that you love, that you can earn money,” Ople shared.

“After putting up a business, and being employed by PLDT and Smart, I decided to put up a sneaker vlog. This was two years ago, and fast forward today, I have uploaded over 900 videos. I have not missed a day of upload since I started. I shoot and edit everything by myself. I don’t have a team,” Ople added, as he empowered participants to make time for their passion and careers.

Apart from being the one-man team for his YouTube channel which currently has more than 569,000 subscribers, Ople is also the Vice President and Deputy Head for Public Affairs of PLDT.

On the other hand, the convention went wild, as the industry’s long-time idol Alodia took the spotlight. As a cosplayer, Alodia talked about unique contents that can attract million of viewers. She also explained that no one can predict if a video will go viral.

Alodia also talked about her viral content, Ghostbusters. “It really looks nice in the video but behind the scenes sobrang init na init na kami diyan,” she shared, claiming that it is important to plan your content starting from the storyline, guests/casts, and down to the execution itself – making sure that it will catch the attention of your fans and potential viewers.
