Six churches under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Digos in Davao del Sur were severely damaged and can no longer be used following the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the province last Sunday.
According to Rev. Fr. Consorcio Lopez Jr., social action center director of Digos, the damaged churches are located in the towns of Padada, Bangkal, Hagonoy, Matanao, Magsasaysay and Digos City.
“The parish churches were severely damaged and can no longer be used for safety reasons including the Mary Mediatrix Cathedral in Digos City,” Lopez said over Church-run Radio Veritas.
“Thousands of houses were totally damaged. People are now staying in tents. Some barangays have no electricity. Aftershocks continue to be felt. Many casualties were from the municipality of Padada, where the epicenter of the strong tremor was located. We are still gathering data,” Lopez added.
The priest appealed for help to provide for the needs of the affected families including tents, water, hygiene kits, and canned goods.
