Vice President Leni Robredo should avoid commenting about the water concession controversy since she knows nothing about it, Malacañang said Monday.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said President Duterte’s stand against the alleged onerous water deals has actually been “very effective” despite the latest appeal of Robredo to take a supposed calmer approach.
“Siguro ang advice natin kay VP Leni, huwag mo nang pasukin iyong hindi mo alam (Maybe our advice to VP Leni is not to join something she knows nothing about),” he said during a press conference in Malacañang.
“I don’t think she knows anything about it. The President has made a stand and the stand appears to be very effective. She should know that,” he said.
Robredo earlier urged the government to take a “calmer” approach in seeking better water concession deals to avoid any “collateral damage.” She noted that the stocks of Manila Water Company Inc. and Maynilad Waters Services Inc have tumbled since the public tirade of the President.
The President earlier expressed outrage against the water concession deals with the two Metro Manila concessionaires, threatening to arrest and sue them for plunder and allow the military to take over their operations.
Amid threats from the President, the two water firms have agreed to renegotiate certain provisions of the concession agreements.
The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) recently revoked the extension of the water distribution contracts until 2037. The agreements with the two water firms are set to expire in 2022.
