Romualdez, in a video message released by the Philippine Embassy in Washington, said he met with US Senators Dick Durbin and Ed Markey “upon request” at Capitol Hill.

The Philippine ambassador said they also discussed the case of Maria Ressa during the meeting.

“We will continue to interact with many of the senators concerned, especially Senator Durbin,” Romualdez said.

“We will be giving them updates on these cases,” the ambassador added.

Durbin and Markey, along with senators Marco Rubio, Chris Coons, and Marsha Blackburn filed a resolution condemning De Lima’s detention.

Durbin also filed an amendment to the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill, prohibiting the entry of Philippine officials who were involved in jailing De Lima in 2017, which was later approved by the US Senate Appropriations Committee.
