The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) has questioned the high prices of eggs despite ample supply in Metro Manila.

EGG SHORTAGE – A laborer prepares to load trays of eggs on to a truck in Bankerohan Market, Davao City. Local poultry growers have said that the massive residential and commercial expansion in the city has resulted in shortage of supply of eggs, as it now needs an additional 20 million more chickens to cope with consumption demand. “Continuous ang production. Walang dahilan na tumaas sobra-sobra. Dapat ma-check natin ang mga nagde-deliver,” said SINAG Chairman Rosendo So in an interview with DZMM.

(The production is continuous. There is no reason for a high increase. We should check those who deliver the eggs.)

The farm price of eggs ranges from P5.12 to P5.97, depending on size and source.

So added that its retail price should only be higher by 50 centavos per piece. A tray of 30 eggs should only retail for a maximun of P195.

However, in Commonwealth Market in Quezon city, the price per tray rose to P205 from the previous P190 for medium-sized eggs, and P238 from P210 for jumbo-sized eggs.
