The municipality of Paluan, Occidental Mindoro was placed under a state of calamity on Monday after 5-meter high tidal waves battered the town for two days.

The impact of the tidal waves, which reportedly reached as high as 5 meters, displaced some 600 persons as their houses were destroyed by the strong waves.

Those who were displaced are now seeking refuge in barangay halls and other safe houses in the municipality.

“It started Wednesday night until Friday morning. The strong waves destroyed houses, fortunately, there was no casualty” said Pangilinan.

He said the waves also damaged 58 fishing boats.

The tidal waves struck the town of Paluan as Typhoon Quiel was on its way out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday morning. (With a report from Aaron Recuenco)
