The President had a coughing fit that interrupted his remarks during the oath-taking of newly appointed government officials in Malacañang Monday afternoon.

Duterte explained that he got the virus after his immune system was affected by the cold weather in Japan. He was in Tokyo for the enthronement ceremony of Emperor last week but cut short his visit over the unbearable pain in his spinal column.

“I’m sorry I have this virus. Nakuha ko sa..ang lamig naman kasi sa Japan. Ang lamig sa gabi ,” he said during his speech.

“Tayong mga Pilipino hindi naman tayo sanay sa ano…Ang immune system mag-dive ,” he said.

The President earlier complained of excruciating pain in his spinal column that was apparently caused by a recent motorcycle fall. Recently he has been diagnosed to have muscle spasm and has been advised by his doctor to rest for a few days and limit his physical activity.

Early Monday, the Palace said the President was able to use a treadmill after his back pain has considerable eased.

Duterte also resumed his workload at the Palace, including administering the oath of office of new presidential appointees.
