President Duterte said that he will not hesitate to exercise his extraordinary powers if water concessionaires will fail to prevent another water crisis from hitting Metro Manila.
Duterte made the statement amid the water interruptions Metro Manila is experiencing due to the low levels of water sources Angat and Ipo dams.
In an interview in Malacañang, Duterte said he already appointed people capable enough to handle the problem.
“I have appointed enough men with equal talent to deal with the problem. I don’t know kung saan sila magkuha. Basta sa akin you produce water, (I don’t know where they will get it but my concern is they have to produce water)” he said Monday evening.
However, if things go south, the President said would use his extraordinary powers to resolve the matter because he could not just let the people go about without water.
“I will use the extraordinary powers of the presidency to… I cannot just allow people to go about without water even for drinking,” Duterte said.
“Expropriation, or outright police power. Wala. Just, ganoon. Diretso (That’s it. I’ll handle it). You just go to court and file a case if you want. I am there and I will start to find a way to connect the water to the people,” he added.
Duterte then reiterated his warning to water concessionaires to shape up or ship out.
“I will go there and operate it myself. I will take over and I will direct what to do. Ganoon lang ‘yan. Hindi niyo kaya? Sige ako. Umalis kayo diyan (That’s it. You can’t do it? Then leave),” he said.
President Duterte warned water concessionaires early this year that he will have their contracts revoked if they fail to address the water crisis that hit Metro Manila.
