“Your Moment” judge Boy Abunda knows exactly what he is looking for in their contestants.
“It’s a very difficult combination of excellence and charisma,” he said. “To me, if you combine talent and the ‘It’ factor—‘yung presence—that becomes your moment.”
He said no single ingredient makes a pie.
“You can have talent pero walang dating. You can have all dating, wala ka namang talent. Pero pagsamahin mo ‘yun and you sparkle.”
The last time Boy acted as judge on a show was in the “Star Circle Quest” batch of Sandara Park.
A lot has changed, he said.
Social media now is very strong. Ang contestants, they have become better. Are we …kasi noon ‘di ba, paiyakan, etcetera.
The other judges are Billy Crawford and Nadine Lustre. The hosts are Luis Manzano and Vhong Navarro.
With the changing landscape of reality competitions, Boy has evolved as change, particularly that he is not as “cruel (as before).”
“Deliberate ang cruelty ko dati kasi ang pananaw natin ay ang starring ay ang contestant, we’re just part of the show. May contestants, then ang judges ang kontrabida,” he said.
Now, it’s a different ballgame as “Your Moment” has a “global audience.”
“I think that the articulation of your commentary, dapat klaro ang pinanggagalingan. I am not saying it wasn’t clear before. Noon mas madali, ngayon hindi, eh. Mahirap dahil matindi ang kompetisyon.”
Now, if someone says he’s not a credible judge because he is neither dancer nor singer, Boy can point out his sterling career as star builder.
“I have managed talents for the last 30 years. I know where I am coming from. But more than that, ang hinahanap ko ay star. Hinahanap ko ‘yung qualities of a star. I didn’t do this alone. I did it with a team. I know kung ano ang aking pinanggagalingan.”
He related that during the show, “we have a chance to speak with the contestants.”
That said, he shares what he always asks of the contestants.
“So, ang tanong ko madalas ay ‘What are you trying to tell us?’ ‘What is your story?’ or ‘Sorry, ha, hindi ko naintindihan kung saan ka papunta. Bakit ka tumili doon?’ As Billy would say, ‘Medyo sabit ang high notes mo.’ And Nadine would say, ‘Nahirapan ka sa movement sa gitna, ‘no?’ It’s a wonderful combination.”
Boy believes it is important they (he, Nadine and Billy) all come from different fields of expertise.
“Our combination is very importante. It’s a group contest, eh. Iba ‘yung performance when you perform as a soloist than when you perform with someone or with a group. “Doon kami tumitingin kay Nadine. How was that experience being part of a girl group kasi iba ‘yung performance.
