GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The local government has declared a state of calamity following a huge conflagration that gutted down the Gaisano Mall here last October 16.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council chaired by City Mayor Ronnel Rivera approved a resolution declaring the state of calamity to provide immediate relief assistance to some 2,000 mall employees who had been displaced by the disaster.
Rivera said the city government had allocated some P21 million from its calamity funds for the subsistence allowance of the displaced employees at P235.00 for the period of 45 days.
City social welfare and development officer Rebecca Magante said their office had conducted profiling on the displaced employees who will also be recommended for work with other local companies.
City Administrator Arnel Zapatos said the city government’s Public Employment Service Office had coordinated with the Department of Labor and Employment for possible job placement of the displaced workers of Gaisano Mall.
Mayor Rivera had asked Sen. Bong Go for possible assistance of the displaced workers who were also enlisted by the city government into its scholarship program.
