Authorities identified the victim as Maureen Palejaro, 42, who worked at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Office in MacArthur town, and a resident of Dulag, Leyte.

Capt. Jennifer Medalla, MacArthur police chief, said Palejaro was riding a motorcycle herself, driven by her officemate, Roldan Evangelista, on her way to her boarding house when two men pushed a motorcycle into their path.

Without saying any word, one of the men pulled a handgun from his bag and shot Japson.

After Japson slumped to the ground, the gunman shot her several times more before fleeing toward Abuyog, Leyte.

Evangelista ran from the crime scene and hid behind a house. He came out only after policemen arrived.
