Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) unveiled the 2020 Montero Sport, taking on a more robust and powerful appearance while complemented with a refreshed interior for a more luxurious and comfortable feel.
The new model takes on a tougher and bolder look, employing Mitsubishi’s signature Dynamic Shield front design concept, evolved to emphasize its width and toughness. The new design features broader headlights continuing from the front grille, complimented by combination lamps now mounted on the bumper corners. This allows the Montero Sport to gain a higher bonnet, for a more solid yet sophisticated appearance. Behind, it features revised taillights that are now cropped and feature a smoked finish.
Propelling it is the same 2.4L MIVEC turbo diesel as its predecessor, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission for high fuel efficiency. It produces 181 PS at 3500 rpm along with 430 Nm of torque at 2500 rpm.
Along with the refreshed exterior is a more luxurious cabin. Ahead of the driver is a new eight-inch color LCD screen that now serves as the configurable instrument cluster. It is flanked by digital displays for the fuel and temperature as well. The driver will find an eight-way power adjustable driver seat. On either side are soft, padded interior door handles.
In the center of the dashboard sits an eight-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA) system which is compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Just under it is the new and intuitive climate control air conditioning system. Below are USB and input connections for a truly multimedia entertainment experience. Underneath is a new floor console just under the main console structure. It features a storage tray that’s accessible from either side. Rear passengers will also have similar power and recharge options, in addition to a 220 volt 150W AC power outlet.
This is just the beginning as Mitsubishi plans to make the 4×4 model available in the near future. This variant will be equipped with the Super-Select 4WD-II system with a newly designed switch that features selectable off-road modes that integrate engine output control, transmission settings and brake power.
The same model will boast of a power tailgate with a hands-free feature. It can be configured through the Mitsubishi Remote control app that allows the driver to lock or unlock the vehicle when within Bluetooth range. The Power Tailgate can be opened or closed by smartphone as well, and set to open automatically when the driver approaches the vehicle.
Nonetheless, all Montero Sport variants will be equipped with several safety features to provide its driver and its passengers peace-of-mind. The new Montero Sport comes with anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, brake override system, active stability and traction control, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, trailer stability assist, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and speed-sensing door locks, and airbags.
