Man dies after being felled by a single punch

An employee of a water services provider will be facing homicide and physical injury charges after a man that he punched died while another was injured after a scuffle in Camarin, Barangay 178, Caloocan City Thursday night.

Police identified the fatality as Arjay Espallardo, 26, and construction worker, and the suspect as Wollo Flores, 20.

Investigation showed that Espallardo and his companied John William Lumactud, 18, were hanging around at the barangay at around 10 p.m. when Flores arrived and attacked them.

Flores punched Espallardo in the face, causing him to fall and hit his head hard on the pavement. He then turned on Lumactud who he punched in the right eye.

Espallardo was rushed to the Dr. Jose Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to East Avenue Medical Center, but he died while receiving medical treatment at around 2:06 a.m. on Friday.

At about 9 a.m. on Friday, Lumactud went to the barangay hall of Barangay 178 to file a complaint against Flores, who accompanied him.

However, a barangay official noticed a knife handle protruding from the right portion of Lumactud’s pants. Upon checking, it was found that Lumactud was carrying a nine-inch kitchen knife, which was turned over to the police for proper disposition.

Both suspects were arrested and were first brought to the Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital for medical examination before being held in police custody.

Flores will be facing charges for homicide and physical injury by mauling, while Lumactud will be facing charges for possession of a bladed weapon.
