16 Indian nationals rounded up in Sultan Kudarat

GENERAL SANTOS CITY– Authorities rounded up Friday at least 16 undocumented Indian nationals in Sultan Kudarat.

Julius Jamorabon, Bureau of Immigration (BOI) alien control officer, said immigration personnel backed by soldiers and policemen, arrested the foreigners who were residents of Tacurong City and Isulan, Sulan Kudarat.

He said most of the Indian nationals were engaged in the loan shark business, or the so-called “5-6” lending scheme, in the locality.

He said immigration authorities launched the crackdown on undocumented foreigners following the arrest of a Swede with Turkish descent in nearby Bagumbayan last week.

Hassan Agkun and three other suspected local militants were arrested during a raid in nearby Bagumbayan town for their alleged links to a local terror group responsible for series of bomb attacks in Isulan town.

At least five people were killed while some 60 others injured during the bomb attacks in Isulan capital town in September last year and last September 7.

The suspects yielded high-powered firearms and improvised explosive device and ISIS flag.

Jamorabon said immigration authorities are also checking the background of the Indian nationals if they are considered security risks.

He added that the Indian nationals were brought to BI district office in Davao City fo¹r further investigation and verification with BI office in Manila.

The immigration official said the suspects will undergo adjudication to determine the legality of their stay in the country, otherwise, they will be deported.
