The social action arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) mourned the demise of former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary Gina Lopez.
Father Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of the CBCP National Secretariat for Social Action Justice and Peace, said they were grieving Lopez’ passing, whose life was spent for a worthy cause.
“We grieve for Gina Lopez. But we, too, are grateful for the gift of life, spent for a worthy cause . . . a life of sincere commitment to what truly matters,” he said in a Facebook post.
“She lived her life to the full, happily and with love. With her, we celebrate life meaningfully,” added Gariguez.
In the past, a number of Catholic prelates appealed to President Duterte to reappoint Lopez as DENR Secretary after the Commission on Appointments rejected her nomination.
The Global Catholic Climate Movement -Pilipinas, a movement that cares for the environment, also paid tribute to Lopez.
“We, in GCCM-Pilipinas, salute and thank you for your passionate commitment to care for Our Common Home! God is surely happy to welcome you in our heavenly Home,” the group said on their Facebook page.
“You will always be remembered by the Filipino people with love and gratitude. Pray for all of us and for our beloved Philippines,” it further read.
Lopez died on Monday due to multiple organ failure brought about by brain cancer. She was 65.
