A signage showed “Skateboards/rollerblades strictly prohibited in this area” in front of the monument on Wednesday morning.

Manila Public Information Office (PIO) Chief Julius Leonen said the playing of skateboards and rollerblades was no longer allowed in the monument.

“Hindi naman po talaga pwede dyan sa Kartilya, for public safety and welfare din. Nakaka-damage po kasi sa granite ang pagbagsak ng mga skateboards and rollerblades, (That is not really allowed in Kartilya for public safety and welfare of the people. The slumping of skateboards and rollerblades could damage the granite)”, he said.

However, he said people can still play around the area but not in the monument.

“Kapag nasira po, may possibility na yung mga next na mag-iiskateboard, o kaya naman yung mga maglalakad, at risk sila sa mga accidents. Pwede pa rin naman sila mag-skate sa area, wag lang mismo sa monument (If it collapses, the next skateboarders or passersby are at risk to accidents. They could still skate in the area but not in the monument)”, he added.

Leonen said they are also looking at the possibility that they would be more strict to other monuments.

” There’s a possibility that we would be more strict to other monuments, our city engineer’s office will look into it. This is not only an issue of desecration but also public safety and welfare,” Leonen said.

He also said there are designated spaces where skaters could play like Manila Skate Plaza located at Canonigo Covered Court in Paco Manila.
