Pinoy grade-schoolers bag 11 awards in HK world math contest

Young Filipino students won 11 awards in an international mathematics contest in Hong Kong.

The eight-member Philippine team bagged two silver and four bronze medals in the individual contest, and four silver medals and a trophy in the team contest at the 22nd Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) held from July 15 to 19 in Hong Kong.

According to the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), in the individual contest, the silver medalists were Jerome Austin Te of Jubilee Christian Academy and Michael Gerard Tongson of Stonyhurst Southville International School-Malarayat.

The bronze medalists were Kody Briones, Emmanuel Christian School; Iris Lexi Ababon, Colegio San Agustin-Makati; Sophie Jill Co, Pace Academy; and Sean Jang, Elizabeth Seton School-South.

In the team contest, Philippine Team A, composed of Ian Gabriel Hong of Pace Academy, Tongson, Te and Briones, won first runner-up and were awarded individual silver medals and a trophy.

They were accompanied by team leaders Renard Eric Chua and Robert Degolacion, and deputy team leaders Quennie Sarabia-Flores and Esther Jane Uy.

“The Filipino contestants proved their competence in math by winning in the contest. We congratulate them for their outstanding performance,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president.

A total of 144 elementary students competed in the 22nd PMWC from the US, China, Australia, South Korea, Bulgaria, Hong Kong, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
