President Duterte has revealed that he could not crack jokes about women at home because his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio will get angry with him.

“Magagalit si Sara [Sara will get mad]. She doesn’t want that,” Duterte said during a television interview Wednesday morning.

“In the house, I can’t say jokes about women. Nagagalit ‘yang anak ko si Sara [My daughter Sara really gets angry],” he added.

The President has often been criticized for his rape jokes and other misogynist remarks in public events but repeatedly denied he was prejudiced against women.

The Palace recently defended the President’s demeanor from critics, saying he was never “bastos” or disrespectful of women, and will even be the first to obey the new Safe Spaces law that penalizes gender-based harassment in streets and public spaces.

In the television interview, Duterte said some people have denounced him for being a misogynist, but pointed out that Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. actually issued more controversial statements than him.

“Sabi nila misogynist tapos I hate women. Pagdating ni Teddyboy Locsin, foreign secretary ko, nag-tweet. He’s an Ateneo graduate and said, ‘I will get a fork parang pala and ram into your genitalia and I will burn it several times and pull it out.’ Grabe. Tahimik na sila [They say I am a misogynist and I hate women. When Foreign Affairs Teddyboy Locsin tweeted, he’s an Ateneo graduate, ‘I will get a fork like a shovel and ram into your genitalia and I will burn it several times and pull it out. That’s severe. They all became quiet],” he said.

“May mas deadly pa sa akin [He is deadlier than me]. I cannot say that. If say that, Sara will get mad,” he said.

Duterte explained that he sometimes makes jokes that “are not funny but funny” because “that’s the Philippine experience.”

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo earlier said the President makes jokes to make people laugh and not offend women. The President’s chief legal counsel insisted that Duterte, who has signed the landmark pro-women law, respects women.
