The Presidential Commission for Urban Poor (PCUP) and the National Food Authority (NFA) said that some 100,000 poor families stood to benefit from the affordable rice that are going to be sold in resettlement sites.

The PCUP said the affordable rice in the resettlement sites in Luzon and Metro Manila will be almost 50 percent less expensive than what it is in the regular market.

At present, the discounted priced rice is only P27.00 per kilo compared to the P38.00 – P50.00 per kilo of commercial rice.
Rhinelan Lachica, Head of the Resettlement Unit of the PCUP said the program targets 2,000 beneficiaries.

Dubbed as “Tagpuan (meeting place)’’, each family is entitled to buy five kilos of rice at a price of only P135.00, or at P27 per kilo.
On July 14, residents of Southville 9, Baras, Rizal trooped to the site where at least 2,000 families benefitted from the PCUP Caravan.

About 10,000 kilos of rice were sold during the Caravan.

“Libo-libo na sa ating urban poor families sa resettlement site ang nagpapasalamat sa patuloy na pagtugon ng NFA sa paghahatid ng abot-kaya at murang bigas (Thousands of urban poor families at the resettlement site thanked the NFA for its invaluable assistance in bringing low priced rice to them),’’ said Lachica.

Since “Tagpuan’’ was launched in October 2018, the program was brought to the various relocation sites in the country at least 50 times where some areas repeatedly benefitted.

This is one of the solutions the agency had thought in coordination with the NFA to address President Duterte’s “Zero Hunger’’ for the urban poor,” Feliciano said.

At present, Feliciano said “Tagupuan’’ and PCUP’s three priority programs are part of the commission’s goal of addressing the hunger woes of the poor as part of the Inter-agency Task Force Against Hunger.
