2 mild quakes jolt Surigao del Sur

BUTUAN CITY – Two mild earthquakes jolted Surigao del Sur province Friday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The Surigao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and management council there reported no damage or injury.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 3:49 a.m. early Friday morning.

The epicenter was plotted 52 kilometers (km) northeast of Bayabas town, Surigao del Sur province.

The earthquake had a depth of 16 km, it said.

At 6:34 a.m. also on Friday, a magnitude 2.9 tremor was also registered, Phivolcs said. The epicenter was traced 61 kms northeast of the same town and province, it said. The earthquake had a shallow depth of only 7 kms.

The two tremors were tectonic in origin and no tsunami alert or aftershock was raised by the state agency.
