5G deployment to do Internet of things wonders for Filipinos - Huawei

Shanghai, China -- Huawei at MWC Shanghai 2019 is all about 5G. And, by its own words, 5G-enabled service innovation "will help us push network performance to the next level and help operators get greater returns on their 5G investment."

Huawei Deputy Chair Ken Hu, in leading the update Huawei's progress in 5G deploymentat the MWC Shanghai 2019, reported concrete examples of how service innovation and cross-industry collaboration are driving the next phase of growth in 5G.

"The networks themselves are the foundation of everything, but the future of 5G development will rely heavily on services. 5G-enabled service innovation will help us push network performance to the next level, and help operators get greater returns on their 5G investment."

To date, Huawei have signed 50 commercial contracts for 5G around the world, and shipped 150,000 5G base stations -- far more than its industry peers.

Many operators around the world, including those from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, are racing to deploy their 5G networks, Hu added.

In a separate interview with select Philippine media also during the MWC Shanghai 2019, Guo Zhi, Vice President of Huawei Technologies, Inc., stressed the need for the Philippines to work double-time in embracing 5G concept.

Filipinos, he said, will reap the rewards of the internet-of-things (IoT) more through 5G.

"But for the Philippines to fully embrace 5G and enjoy its many potentials, you must first lay down the backbone, the foundation of 5G. Unlike 4G which is technically a highway of all things digital under the ground."

Zhi then emphasized the big roles of the telcos will play in Huawei's 5G development in the Philippines.

"You must build the foundation underground, to use fiber optics technology for 5G which is faster, more efficient, than microwave technology."

China had officially issued its 5G licenses earlier this month, marking the beginning of 5G commercialization in the world's largest mobile communications market.

"Why are so many operators willing to choose Huawei for 5G? I think one of the biggest reasons is our long term investment. We often say innovation is a marathon. You need to be fast, of course, but in it for the long run. When we began 5G research, there were no standards to speak of. We had to basically start from scratch – we couldn't jump into product development right away. Products are only the results you see at the tail end of a very long process. So in the beginning we focused on standards development and basic research in chips, materials and algorithms. This ongoing investment in R&D has helped us stay ahead."

Huawei holds more than 2,500 standard essential patents for 5G, which is roughly 20% of all 5G patents in the world. During the third phase of 5G field trials organized by IMT-2020, our solutions outperformed our competitors, ranking No.1 across many key indicators.

"But innovation isn't just about technology. Part of our success is our focus on making 5G easier to operate, more affordable, and simpler to deploy."

"Building a Fully Connected, Intelligent World" is Huawei's battlecry in MWC, sharing with the participants multiple topics, including 5G coverage, simplified 5G sites, 5G service deployment, industry applications, and AI-powered operations.

Global digitization accelerates with new technologies - 5G artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet-of-Things (IoT).

And the telecommunications industry, as the cornerstone of intelligent connectivity, need to adapt and join the new cycle.

Zhi thinks it wise for the Philippines to join the 5G drive.

"In the most simple description, 5G in the Philippines would make things faster, easier, and cheaper to all Filipinos."

"As applications would work on 5G, Filipinos will save time and effort as they go about their lives under the internet-of-things."
