FilOil Preseason: Undefeated Red Lions face undermanned Stags

The San Beda Red Lions, the lone undefeated team in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup, look to continue their winning ways when they battle a wounded San Sebastian College-Recoletos side today at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

SBC, Group A leaders at 5-0, look to new scoring leaders James Kwekuteye and Clint Doliguez, to take the fight to second running San Sebastian (4-1) in the 5:45 p.m. match.

San Sebastian, despite missing star forward Allyn Bulanadi who is out for a few weeks with a dislocated shoulder, defeated CEU, 90-88, during last Friday's match up.

The Stags will count on the vastly improved RK Ilagan, returning Alvin Capobres, and JM Calma in their game against San Beda. The Stags hope to stay ahead of 4-2 La Salle in Group A.

In other key matches, National University hopes to get a win against Group B leaders, Lyceum of the Philippines in the 2:15pm game, to bolster their chances at a quarterfinals slot. NU is on the outside looking in at fifth with a 3-2 record. If they can defeat LPU and Adamson in their final eliminations round game, they will advance. It
is a tall order, but doable nonetheless.

Group B third-placer, Letran, started like a house on fire winning their first four matches before losing the last two. They go up against a College of St. Benilde Blazers team that is looking to finish strong in the 4 p.m. offering.

In other seniors matches, Centro Escolar University looks to dispatch Arellano University which is out of the running for a quarterfinals slot at 10:45 a.m. If CEU keeps their head above water, they have a chance to advance to the next round.

UST and their second year head coach Aldin Ayo face off against former Growling Tigers assistant coach, Randy Alcantara who is now the head coach of the Mapua Cardinals at 12:30 p.m.

In other matches, De La Salle Zobel’s 11-Under squad battles Marist at 8 a.m. while their high school team collides with San Beda at 9 a.m.

The Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup named UP's Bright Akhuetie as the Gatorade Player of the Week for June 3-7 when he compiled 17 points, 16 rebounds, one assist, and one steal in their win over UST last week. Joining Akhuetie in the Best Five of the Week are San Sebastian’s RK Ilagan, EAC’s JP Maguliano, LPU’s Jason David, and San Beda’s Donald Tankoua.

CEU’s Maodo Diouf was once more the Gatorade Defensive Player of the Week when he collected 29 defensive statistical points.
