The Gilas women’s 3×3 national team fell to Japan, 20-8, at the start of the second stage of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup Friday in Changsha, China.

It was the team’s first game after topping Pool A in the first round with wins against Chinese Taipei (16-13) and Samoa (21-1) last Wednesday and versus Vanuatu (22-5) last Thursday.

Despite the setback, the Philippines still has a chance to advance to the “Sweet 16” playoffs but face a must-win situation against Sri Lanka late Friday afternoon.

The women’s team has collegiate standouts Jack Danielle Animam and Afril Bernardino of National University, Janine Pontejos of Centro Escolar University and Clare Castro of Far Eastern University.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) appointed women’s coach Pat Aquino calls the shots for the national team.
