DAVAO CITY –  The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 11 (BFAR 11) is set to extend the closed season for fishing at the Davao Gulf.

BFAR 11 Director Fatma Idris disclosed that her office will propose the extension of the fishing ban to four months, instead of just three months, to ensure the sufficient supply of fish in the gulf.

"Gusto naming i-extend dahil nga pagdating ng September marami pa ring nga maliliit na isda na nahuhuli (We just want to extend it because there still same fish being taken in September)," Idris said.

She said the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) noted there was a decrease in fish production in the region.

"They (PSA) always look on the marketable size (of the fish)"  she said.

Idris said the closed season is set to start on June 1, but if the stakeholders will agree they will end the ban in September.
