ILOILO CITY—A former mayor, who is in jail on a gun ban violation charge, again won the mayoralty race in Bugasong town, Antique.
John Lloyd Pacete defeated the acting mayor, Bernard Pesayco. Pacete had 10,139 votes, about 3,000 more than Pesayco’s.
Pacete was detained last month in relation to his gun ban violation case during the 2016 elections. He stayed in jail after his appeal last February to overturn a conviction for illegally possessing a gun involved in a 2016 homicide case was denied.
Pacete, who was the vice mayor then and mayoralty candidate, allegedly hid the gun instead of turning it over to police.
While still in jail, the provincial board of canvassers proclaimed him mayor of Bugasong town.
“He won and his conviction is not yet final,” said Wil Arceño, Antique provincial director of Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Arceño is referring to Pacete’s pending case before the Court of Appeals (CA).
In a phone interview, Arceño further told Manila Bulletin it is only the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) that can decide whether or not Pacete can assume office on June 30.
Meanwhile, Renante Dava won as vice mayor against Gerry Antoy.
