TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — Gemma Lubigan, the widow of slain Trece Martires Vice Mayor Alex Lubigan, is winning the mayoral race in Trece Martires City.
Lubigan has 27,918 votes as of Tuesday morning, based on the unofficial tally taken from 98.91% of the city precincts. Former City Mayor, Melencio de Sagun Jr., her closest rival, had 21,197 votes.
The widow’s husband, Alex, was killed by a group in a car ambush last July 7. Also killed was Alex’s aide. A suspect was identified and arrested by police.
Gemma decided to run for mayor after the incident. She vied against De Sagun and incumbent Vice Mayor Denver Colorado.
De Sagun is the father of outgoing Mayor Melandres de Sagun. Melandres was earlier linked to the slay of Alex. The authorities later dismissed the charge against Melandres.
Melencio Jr. decided to run again for mayor as Melandres was on his last and final term.
