CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna – Police in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) arrested Tuesday two supporters of a mayoralty candidate in Tagkawayan, Quezon, for alleged vote buying.

The police report identified those arrested as Fredilino Cunanan, 45, of Barangay Tabason, and Darius Bonifacio, 47, of Barangay Cabugwang, both of this town.

Elements from the Tagkawayan Municipal Police Station, 2nd Quezon Provincial Mobile Force Company, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 4A and Quezon Highway Patrol Group reportedly made the arrests at a checkpoint set up for the elections.

Cunanan was pulled over for riding his motorcycle without a helmet. He was looking for his driver’s license in his bag when sample ballots with P500 bills stapled on them fell out.

The sample ballots listed the political slate of Roberto De Vero, police said.

Navarro meanwhile was flagged down at the same checkpoint because of an overloaded motorcycle.

Sample ballots for De Vero’s slate were found with P500 bills attached to them.

“We will not stop going after these persons who are trying to tarnish the credibility of this year’s elections. We will show them that we will not tolerate any election fraud or irregularities by whatever means,” regional police director Brig. Gen. Edward Carranza said.
