“We will investigate. So, part of our investigation is to check. But our investigation will be looking into their compliance on labor laws,” said Labor Assistant Secretary Benjo Benavidez.

Benavidez said that it is the labor department’s mandate to check if the said Chinese businesses are complying with Philippine labor laws.

“To us on the employment side. Labor and Employment. We enforce labor laws and employment laws,” he said.

It is the role of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to ensure consumer protection.

“If it is consumer protection, ano siya DTI kasi may consumer protection act tayo eh. (It is under DTI  because we have a consumer protection act),” he added.

Malacanang earlier instructed the DOLE and other state agencies to verify reports about Chinese businesses catering exclusively to Chinese nationals. Senator Panfilo Lacson urged the government to close down such establishments.
