The Batangas provincial police reported the arrest of a barangay chairman for illegal possession of firearms Tuesday.

Police provincial chief Edwin Quilates identified the official as Gerardo Villanueva, barangay chairman of San Sebastian, Balete town.

Villanueva was arrested by a Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Batangas Field Unit.

Confiscated from him were a caliber 45 pistol and ammunition.

The police also reported the killing of a suspected drug personality identified as Rodrigo Javier Andres, 41, a resident of Calamba City.

Andres is said to have fired at police who were issuing him a search warrant in Barangay Poblacion, Sto. Tomas town. The officers fired back, killing Andres.

Andres had eluded arrest during a search warrant operation last April 10 in Calamba.

Twelve drug suspects were also arrested in a series of drug busts conducted by police in the province.
