Busy year ahead for Beach Volleyball Republic

The Beach Volleyball Republic On Tour will strive to give more opportunities to players to do what they love most and hopefully, bring out the best in them through regular competitions around the country.

In doing so, the BVR is also helping to promote the sport as well as showcase the many beautiful beaches in the country.

This was stressed by Bea Tan, one of the co-founders of the highly-successful beach volleyball program as she unveiled a busy schedule aimed at encouraging more people to play beach volleyball while giving national players the much-needed exposure leading to the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila starting late November.

"In BVR, we want more opportunities to play. As players, we really want to play. I'm a player myself. We also saw players elsewhere in the Philippines who also want to play and enjoy the game," said Tan, one of three women leaders who graced "Usapang Sports" by the Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) at the National Press Club in Intramuros recently.

"That's really the reason why we got together and form the BVR back in 2015. We want to play and stay in good shape through regular competition," added Tan.

"We're here to promote the sport. We also saw another aspect wherein we can promote our top beaches and get to travel and get more players to be more passionate" added Tan, who also dreams of representing the country in international competitions.

"We create a program where more athletes will get to play beach volleyball."

Asked about the country's coming 30th Southeast Asian Games, Tan said that Thailand remains the team to beat because of a solid beach volleyball program.

"But I believe we have the talents needed to compete against the best in the region. With good training and proper exposure, we have a very chance for a podium finish. It's just a matter of time," added Tan, who co-founded the league along with former Ateneo Lady Eagles Charo Soriano, Gretchen Ho, Fille Cainglet-Cayetano, Dzi Gervacio, and Alexa Micek.

Tan's optimism on the country's chances stems from the fact that more players are joining in the BVR.

"For one, the men's team led by coach Tupaz will join the BVR as part of its preparations for the SEAG. It's good exposure for them because we have also invited international teams."

On the BVR on Tour, Tan had a lot of good things to add.

"We just recently concluded our Cebu leg in Bantayan Island in partnership with Cebu Provincial Sports last weekend. Our first leg was in Puerto Galera. Second stop was Cebu," she said.

"Then we'll be in Dumaguete on April 26-27. We're actually trying to pull off a two-event back to back. After Dumaguete, we'll be in Lingayen on April 30 -May 1."

Tan said BVR has already invited 24 teams -- 12 teams in men and 12 women.

"It's actually open to international teams since we started in 2016 to help with the competition level."

The highlight of the busy year is the hosting of the FIVB World Tour again at the White House Beach in Boracay on May 23-26.
