It was still unclear why Ammar de Leon, 37, of Nueva Ecija, jumped off the MV SBI Aries as he only told authorities that “he intentionally jumped off from the vessel wearing life jacket” because there was a “threat in his life.”

The case is now under investigation, the Coast Guard said.

It was disclosed that Coast Guard Station Brooke’s Point received an electronic mail from Coast Guard District Palawan when de Leon went missing.

A team from Coast Guard Station Balabac was then deployed to verify the report and conduct search and rescue operation.

While the team was scouring the area, they found de Leon, who was wearing a life jacket, floating and waving his hands for rescue. He was then brought to the Coast Guard Station Brooke’s Point.
