LUCENA CITY, Quezon – A state of calamity has been declared in Quezon following crop losses from El Niño.

The declaration was passed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in a special session Wednesday.

The session was requested by Gov. David Suarez who wanted to put up a P19.9-million fund to mitigate the effects of the El Niño-induced dry spell on agricultural lands.

The provincial agriculture office headed by Roberto Gajo reported to the provincial board that three of the four districts of the province have been affected by El Nino.

Affected were rice production, high-value crops, corn, and other agricultural yields Gajo said.
